Interview with Mut Design

Spending some time with Mut Design

Thanks to Eduardo Villalón and Alberto Sanchez for giving us their point of view about Covid-19 and changes at design, trends, etc.

1 - Who is Mut Design?

We started working together in 2009 and it was the following year when we decided to officially present the studio in Milan at the Salone Satellite 2010 with different furniture concepts. From the very beginning, we received a warm welcome from the professional public and the press. Already in 2012, the magazine Wallpaper* placed us among the most representative studios of the new trend of Spanish design. This support has helped us to consolidate our position as a studio and has given our projects great visibility. This year 2020 we were selected as honorary guests of IMM Cologne developing the project DAS HAUS. From our studio located in Valencia we collaborate with different companies from different sectors both nationally and internationally, helping them in the areas of product design and artistic direction.

2 - What changes has the Covid-19 pandemic brought about for you?

Given the Spanish government restrictions due to the quarantine we had to close the studio, the whole team is teleworking from home. Fortunately, there are all these communication tools such as email, whatsapp, skype, etc.

3 - How has it affected your work?

Obviously, this is not the same as working all together at the same table, something we find really relevant in the study, as we consider it to be the most efficient way of communicating and giving each other feedback. But we are managing teleworking very well. We have our computers and we can always draw by hand, to make the first scale models we can find materials at home to work with, not being able to buy new materials easily may not be a limitation, but an opportunity to activate creativity.

4 - Will your way of thinking change?

From our side we think that not at an aesthetic level. But with regard to textures, materials, fabrics, etc., we will think more about applying them for disinfection purposes.

5 - Adaptation of trend to the market

Of course, in terms of product typology, there will be a completely new vision, especially for the design of public spaces. For instance, partition screens for public spaces, shared workspaces…
We think that the tile sector also as integration of signage, cleanliness of the material, etc.

Thanks!
