5 interior design trends that are all set to lead the field in 2021

Each season, new trends in interior design replace former ones, bringing living spaces with new looks to our everyday lives, whether it is in the home or in the workplace.

Despite the previous troublesome year and long confinement, interior designers have managed to come up with new ideas and new collections, aimed at putting the broad spectrum of alternatives in the shade.

In the coming months, bold enterprising visions and trends will be showcased that take us back in time to the 1960s and 70s. Warm neutral settings will take pride of place, with handcrafted items and natural materials being used to dress up the home, combined with smaller sized ceramic tiles of differing shapes, often with a strongly textured design.

These are the 5 design trends that will lead the field in 2021:

Warm neutral colours

In 2021, colours in far more neutral shades will prevail, given the urge to foster a strong sense of wellbeing in reaction to the previous year. Shades like beige, grey, black and white will predominate on both the walls and floors of our homes, always accompanied by a dash of colour to add a bright, cheerful touch. One good example is this kitchen, where different whites have been combined with “Crazed Grey” wall tiles by Harmony and the shades of the kitchen furniture.

A return to traditional craftsmanship

As for this year's materials, renewed value will be placed on items conspicuous for their exclusive, authentic, handcrafted appeal, and the interior design world will pay tribute to artisanal pottery techniques by bringing the beauty of slight imperfections to living spaces.

A strong emphasis on natural looks

Tiles with looks evocative of fine quality natural materials will also be all the rage. Marble, wood, clay and terracotta will all be very much in evidence, primarily in warm neutral shades.

The "Terra" collection by Harmony combines a strong Mediterranean flavour with a terracotta appearance conspicuous for its warmth and natural appeal.

For those keen on more rustic looks, wood will continue to be in vogue this year. The "Columbus" wood-effect porcelain tile collection by Harmony combines a coloured cement appearance with a wood grain pattern in 6 different colours. Thanks to its format, the collection can be used in a wide variety of settings, on both walls and floors. The tiles can be laid in a multitude of different ways, adding a sense of dynamism to surfaces.

Attention to detail

In the design of any interiors, what really makes a difference is attention to detail. The furniture, choice of flooring, colours and tiles used on the walls, location of light fixtures and fabrics are just as important as the layout of a building or the construction materials that are used.

In recent years, tiles have come to play a prime role in interior design. This year will be no exception, with tiles being used in all areas of the home, not just in bathrooms and kitchens.

The “Casablanca” collection by Harmony, available in a small 12.5x12.5 format, can be used in endless different combinations on both walls and floors, thanks to the 10 décors featured in the collection.

New shapes and textures

Another in-vogue trend is to use tiles with textures or relief patterns so that fascinating optical effects can be created in interiors.

This trend takes advantage of interplay between the design and lines of some tiles, or the relief patterns of others that add a certain irregular volumetric visual appeal to walls.

As for the use of shape, tiles will be seen with jutting out lines that form gentle waves or regular geometrical designs, perfect for creating stylish one-of-a-kind settings full of subtle nuances.
